International drivers permits

We’ve decided to road trip across parts of the US, namely LA to Vegas and then New Orleans to Miami via Orlando.  I’ve been doing a bit of research about licence restrictions and from what I can tell, our current Victorian/NSW drivers licences should cover us, however I still think it would be a wise to purchase an International Drivers Permit from the RACV.  For $32 you can’t really afford not to get one – just in case!

Has anyone had experiences where they’ve needed to produce the IDP for any reason?  Eg. care hire, police etc??

An Australian driver’s license is just fine. I’ve driven in
US (multiple times), UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Croatia with a
Victorian license without any troubles hiring a car. The main point
is that the license is in English so the cops can understand it if
they pull you over. And read up on the road rules, because there
are some differences to be aware of. Save the $32 for some beers
    :)

Thanks Peter. We’ll be sure to have a shout in your honour. :)

I’m an Aussie and was living in Orlando for a year, we had no problems driving on our Aussie license and also hiring cars with it too :-) Hope that helps! I’d take Peter’s advice and save it for some beers… if you head to Ale House just outside of Downtown Disney in Orlando, you can order 5 buckets (at x5 bottles of beer per bucket) for $32!

Wow … Buckets of beer! … Thanks for the tip! … P.S. Love your site! Just spent the last hour adding stuff to our ‘to do’ list! :)

Thanks so much! Orlando is definitely a heap of fun! Be sure to check out the Cirque du Soleil show I used to work at at Downtown Disney, bit pricey but definitely worth it!!!
